What it costs and how long it takes

Volume drives effort, so honest firms quote after seeing the file, not before. As a working range, expect one to three weeks of elapsed time per year of backlog for a typical small business, and insist on a fixed quote — an open-ended hourly cleanup is an invitation to a runaway invoice.

Beware of two red flags when comparing providers: anyone quoting a precise price without seeing your file, and anyone unwilling to cap the engagement in writing.

A cleanup that ends with ‘here are your clean books, good luck’ has a predictable sequel twelve months later. The valuable ending includes: a properly configured chart of accounts, automation connected (bank feeds, receipt capture), a documented monthly routine — and ideally, someone owning that routine so the founder never becomes the bottleneck again.
